INSAT Reporting Terminal:
This
project was undertaken for the Space Applications Center of the Indian Space
Research Organization, Ahmedabad. Its applications are in the following areas
of message reporting:
The design brief was to make it rugged and easy for use in adverse environment. This was challenging. The design process was divided in 3 phases:
The Ergonomics phase design of phase A and B included:
Concept
development, section of a suitable design and making drawings and models of
the selected design. After an iteration of corrections, the design was finalized
and a final working prototype was developed for field testing.
Components used for controls such as switches, key board, display functions, suitable battery with suitable interface with users and appropriate material for production, in this case polycarbonate..
Product development included the color integeration, structure characteristics, housing of circuitry, electronics module for ease of maintenance and other manufacturing parameters.
The terminal would be operated by unskilled persons and so the level of user friendliness has to be accordingly.
The design was then sent for mold development for injection molding. The manufactures were identified by SAC to whom the technology was transferred. Today this product is being used in a number of sectors such as defence and transportation.
