PYGMY - An AC Drive: (1995)
AC drives are used to control AC motor speeds. It is generally a dull looking industrial product. With the increasing competition, this product needed special attention in design.
The design was from scratch. It had to be made as compact and small as possible, with attractive aesthetics. It also had to be easily serviceable with quick assembly.
As this was a new introductory product, its volumes were not known. So initially, it was decided to be made out of sheet metal. This way, its entire electronics was mounted onto the specially designed heat sinks. This eliminated a separate chassis. The assembly was tricky as it consisted of various number of large PCBs with large power electronics components on it. These had to be mounted such that it could be serviced easily. They were interconnected with cables. For this, a special hinging arrangement was designed, thereby making both assembly and servicing easy.
External housing was made out of sheet metal. The control panel consisting of some switches and controls were on a membrane key board with elegant graphics. Its overall size turned out to be the smallest in market. It lived up to its name - Pygmy
