The Personal Locator Beacon:
This
project was undertaken in early nineties for the Space Applications Center,
Ahmedabad. The product is used by anyone in crisis who needs to be located by
the search and rescue team. It is small device that transmits signals to satellite
which in turn determines its exact geographical location and relays that information
to the search and rescue team anywhere on the globe.
It has to be rugged yet, light weight and handy. It must function in crisis which could be anything such as a sinking ship, a crash land, a lost trekking team in extreme weather conditions etc.. For this, the product needs to be water proof to at least 30 feet under water, impact proof and has to work under extreme temperatures and climate.
This was challenging. The design process was extensive and with numerous consultations with the ISRO engineers. The drawings were converted into prototypes by using fibreglass and aluminium chassis. The assembly was designed to be rugged, reliable and simple. Simplicity here meant that the battery needed to be replaced without opening many screws, but at the same time, it had to be in a water proof casing.
Non corrosive hardware was used and special switches were used to meet the extreme conditions.
Golden Section made ten prototypes and these were successfully tested under various conditions.
